According to a recent study by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), an association of scientists, the Northern Schneeferner will not last into the second half of this century while its neighbor, the smaller Southern Schneeferner, is likely to disappear completely within coming years. Both glaciers have retreated continuously since 1980, which scientists attribute to global warming.
